Rockstar is offering a free PS5 upgrade for all existing Grand Theft Auto V (GTA 5) owners to shift players off the PS4 ahead of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) release in November 2026. The move, announced alongside a major GTA Online update, aims to ensure players are on the latest hardware to experience improved performance and new features.
The free upgrade becomes available on 18 July 2026 and includes both physical and digital copies of GTA 5. Rockstar has emphasized that the PS5 version will offer “vast technical improvements, easy migration of your Story Mode and Online progress, and new features including Hao’s Special Works high-performance vehicles and upgrades, Career Progress rewards, and much more.”
What the Free PS5 Upgrade Includes
Rockstar’s PS5 upgrade for GTA 5 is more than just a hardware shift — it’s a full experience overhaul. The PS5 version will support enhanced visuals, faster load times, and better performance, especially for GTA Online players. The migration process is designed to be seamless, allowing players to transfer their Story Mode and Online progress without losing any data.
New features in the PS5 version include Hao’s Special Works, a high-performance vehicle tuning system, and Career Progress rewards, which offer in-game incentives for completing specific tasks. These additions are part of a broader push to keep GTA Online engaging for its still-large player base — nearly two million active players remain on the PS4 version.
Why This Matters for GTA Online and GTA 6 Players
For GTA Online players, staying on the PS4 could mean missing out on future updates and the full GTA 6 experience. The PS5 version is the recommended platform for the upcoming Kortz Center Heist, a new update launching in July 2026. This heist involves raiding a prestigious art gallery in Los Santos and includes a new Art Studio business that players can add to their properties.
